[Link] | I'm tying up my Wed-Sunday tour of Austin, at South By Southwest tonight.
Tomorrow I get on a plane with Brooke (My girlfriend? Have I not posted in six months? Sounds crappily plausible.), and am going back to work on Tuesday.
The people in the room above ours have been having crazy sex (lots of banging and creaking and thumping) for three days now. Frankly, it's impressive.
I'm exhausted, and blisters, and have all kinds of questions about love and music that maybe I'll answer for myself in writing, which maybe I'll post here.
In the meantime, here are the acts I saw this weekend:
The Weakerthans (twice) Anathallo Throw Me the Statue Kevin Devine Human Giant The Upright Citizen's Brigade Two Gallants Eugene Mirman Brian Posehn (for a minute) Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltzin Jens Lekman The Cribs This Bike is a Pipe Bomb (they sucked, they were drunk) Lightspeed Champion MxPx

Dear Boston Bands DO NOT PLAY THE FUCKING ROXY.
They have no box office, and the minimum ticket price is 20 dollars. Which means that you have to go through Ticket Master, and they have an 11 dollar per ticket surcharge. A CONVENIENCE CHARGE. It's not CONVENIENCE if there is NO OTHER WAY TO ACQUIRE TICKETS.
Bands I Was Going to Go See But Now Will Not Because They Are Playing the Roxy And FUCK THAT:
Bang Camaro New Pornographers They Might Be Giants Spoon Ted Leo & The Pharmacist
and any other band that will be playing there short of Piebald or Pixies.
UGH. PUNCHES FOR ALL.

[Link] | I love the song "Young Americans", in spite of it's prominent saxophone action.
I once had a friend hear it and write it off, because at the 4 minute mark, the female backup singers do a line from a beatles song. "I fucking hate it when songs do that!" Oh, Steve...
The Konks rock (God says, woah mother fucker, God says), as does walking around forever with no plan other than to keep walking around.
Also: surfer rosa gets better with every listen. I sit down purely intending to put on Tromp Le Monde or Doolittle, but somehow I end up listening to Bone Machine, and then rest from there. I'm going to go ahead and deem it my favorite album, uh, ever. Stop Making Sense is a close second.
Mission of Burma tonight.

Joe Quesada Said This... When asked about his opinion on downloading comics from the internet, Marvel Editor in Chief replied:
"I'm against it. It's the same thing as going in to a comics shop and stealing a comic off the shelf."
Now, I recently got into a fairly lengthy debate at work about the morality of downloading comics from the internet, whether or not it was "Okay." My co-worker's stance was a very futurist perspective; that with the internet and scanners, comic books as the exist currently are not a viable economic model, and by stealing them he was simply furthering their evolution to the next step in finding a profitable model. He's not wrong.
My perspective was, I believe, more realistic - The real casualties of this evolution in comics will be the voices that most need to be heard. The larger books, Avengers, Spider-Man, Batman and Superman, they will all remain even if comics turn to an all digital medium. And even if their comics divisions close completely, Marvel and DC's strongest intellectual properties will remain prominent in popular culture for years. By stealing comics off the internet you are punishing companies for publishing riskier titles like Manhunter and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane; and more importantly the creators who are bringing a fresh perspective and new voice the medium. The voices that are going to be silenced during this massive change are going to be smaller creators - and I think that if you truly enjoy an artist's work, it's important to support them so that they can create further.
NOWHERE IN MY ARGUMENT DID I SUGGEST THAT IT'S LIKE STEALING A COMIC.
Yes, stealing comics takes one less potential buyer out of the pool for comics shops, but a physical comic is something that someone else has already paid the cost for, so you are effectively taking 3 dollars out of the pocket of (Most likely in the case of comics shops) a small business. It just drives me nuts that in order to try and get people to stop doing something that is (arguably) hurting his company, Joe Quesada guilt trips and accuses people of stealing from business owners who are not part of his billion dollar company.

Music Revelations Weezer has an unreleased second album from which several tracks resurfaced onto Pinkerton.
It is an epic Space Opera about Space Accademy Cadet Jonas and his girlfriend Maria. Swear to god.
Also, can we talk about Guyz Nite for just a second? This is Guy Manly, the lead singer:

They do such songs as "Die Hard" about the Die Hard Trilogy, "Wingman" about being a wingman, and "I'm Always Game (For some Football)" which is about football.

MoCCA Festival! This was the first of what I hope will be an annual trip the MoCCA festival in NYC.
NYC is kind of crappy. I'm just putting that out there.
The festival was awesome though, I have a ton of stuff I never would have read if I hadn't gone, got an awesome Jeffrey Brown sketch, and met some of my favorite creators.
Creators I was super excited to meet: Evan Dorkin Bryan Lee O'Malley Jeffrey Brown Rick Spears Rob G Vasilis Lolos Maris Wicks (Hey! She's from Somerville!) J. Jacques (Hey! He's from somewhere in Western Mass!)
Creators I Kind of Saw, and Like, But Didn't Go Say Anything To: Hope Larson Adrian Tomine (Serious, his table was packed with the ladies, the ladies.)
Creators I Got To Embarrass Myself In Front Of: Becky Cloonan Paul Hornschemeier
I am pleased that the first two lists are longer than the third.
Also, had a nice little conversation with Morgan Spurlock of all people. Serious.
Also, Kevin Church (www.beaucoupkevin.org) deserves a special thanks for introducing me around. The man is like the king of indie comics land.
'spect to see some reviews of the books I picked up over my mah blog, which reboots in July.
P.S. If you like Punk, and are not listening to "The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine," you need to get on that fast.

Ow. Ow. Scratchy. So, today, my company had their annual picnic/clambake. It was on Georges Island.
Now, sunblock was offered. It was PRO-FUCKING-VIDED. But I said "No. I do not need this."
So I spent most of the day, with the exception of maybe a HALF AN HOUR in the shade, hanging out under the awning at the picnic tables. It was fun!
What I forgot about was the 45 minute ferry ride back. And the 20 minute walk to the train. And the 30 minute walk home.
I am fucking burnt.

Sneak Peak So I'm undertaking a massive blog redesign.
Since i have no HTML skills, a friend is setting up the actual page for me, but I need to design it. Here's my preliminary shot at it. It needs a logo, I want it to be sort of carved into the wood, and I have a very talented graphic design friend who said she'd help me with it.
Yes, she's reading this. Yes, that was transparent flattery.*
So I spent a couple hours w/photoshop getting the basics down, here's a sneak peek:

[Link] | my weekend has been insane
a double-surprise birthday party triple surprise funeral for people who were neither celebrating a birthday nor dead
the muppet movie
a beautiful, hurt, sniffling woman
wandering around by myself trying to figure out what's happening
an extremely cute girl who dissapeared quickly, confusingly
more confusion and absurdity I thought was done with
and tomorrow I have potentially brunch with my family, seeing and old friend's new house, and a wrestlemania party full of people who don't like wrestling.
